TOFD

Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD)

High-probability-of-detection weld inspection with accurate through-wall sizing.

Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) measures the ultrasonic energy diffracted from the tips of a flaw rather than the energy reflected from its face. This makes it highly sensitive to cracks regardless of their orientation and exceptionally accurate for through-wall height sizing.

A single TOFD pass covers the full weld volume quickly, which is why it is frequently combined with PAUT for pre-service and in-service weld programs on pressure equipment and pipelines.

Typical Applications

  • New-construction weld qualification
  • In-service crack monitoring and growth tracking
  • Heavy-wall vessel and pipework welds
  • Combined PAUT + TOFD inspection packages

Why TESKO NDT

  • Excellent crack-height sizing accuracy
  • Fast, single-pass volumetric coverage
  • Orientation-independent flaw detection
  • Recordable digital data set

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

TOFD excels at sizing and detecting mid-wall flaws but has near-surface dead zones; PAUT covers those zones and adds angular detail. Together they give near-complete weld coverage with strong sizing.
