Leak & Vacuum Box Testing (LT)

Leak detection in closed systems and weld-seam tightness testing with helium and vacuum-box methods.

Leak Testing (LT) is a non-destructive method used to detect leaks in closed systems. In applications requiring high sensitivity, helium is used as a tracer gas: the system is pressurised with helium and leak points are located with sensitive detectors or hand-held instruments.

Vacuum box testing is applied particularly on tanks and large welded surfaces to check the tightness of weld seams. A test solution is applied to the surface, negative pressure is created with a vacuum box, and leaks are identified from the bubbles that form.

Both methods are used for quality and safety verification in energy, marine and industrial facilities in accordance with international standards.

Typical Applications

  • Storage tank floor and shell weld-seam tightness
  • Pressure vessel and heat-exchanger leak testing
  • Pipeline and pipework leak detection
  • Helium leak testing of critical closed systems
  • Vacuum-box testing of new and in-service welds
  • Roof and bottom seam integrity checks

Why LT (Leak & Vacuum Testing)?

  • High-sensitivity leak detection with tracer gas
  • No access to the far side required for vacuum-box testing
  • Fast go / no-go verification of weld tightness
  • Applicable on new build and in-service equipment

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Helium (tracer gas) testing is used for high-sensitivity leak detection in closed, pressurised systems; vacuum-box testing checks the tightness of weld seams on tanks and large plate surfaces where only one side is accessible.

Yes. Both methods can be applied on in-service tanks, vessels and piping, making LT ideal for periodic integrity and repair verification.

Yes — every test is documented with the procedure, acceptance criteria and results in a reviewed report suitable for class, notified-body or client QA.
