Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)

Surface discontinuity detection on all non-porous materials.

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) draws a coloured or fluorescent dye into surface-breaking discontinuities by capillary action; once the developer is applied, the flaws bleed out as clear indications. It works on virtually any non-porous material, including stainless steel, aluminium and many non-metals.

It is the go-to method for detecting surface discontinuities where the material is non-magnetic and MT cannot be used.

Typical Applications

  • Stainless and aluminium welds
  • Castings and machined components
  • Leak-path and surface crack screening
  • Non-ferromagnetic assemblies

Why PT (Liquid Penetrant Testing)?

  • Works on non-magnetic materials
  • Very low equipment cost and high portability
  • High sensitivity to fine surface cracks
  • Simple, well-established acceptance criteria

Frequently Asked Questions

No — PT only reveals defects open to the surface. For subsurface or volumetric flaws we use UT, PAUT or RT.
